NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The Carolina Cold Fury hockey series continues as the team’s most notorious party animal gets blindsided by the one that got away.
Off the ice, elite defenseman Hawke Therrien enjoys his fair share of booze and good times. And why shouldn’t he? He’s worked his way up from the minor leagues and made himself a star. The only thing Hawke misses from that life is the pierced, tattooed free spirit who broke his heart without so much as an explanation. She’s almost unrecognizable when she walks back into his life seven years later—except for the look in her eyes that feels like a punch to the gut.
Vale Campbell isn’t the same girl she was at twenty. As crazy as she was about Hawke, her reckless behavior and out-of-control drinking were starting to scare her. She had to clean up her act, and that would never happen with Hawke around. Cutting him loose was the hardest thing Vale ever had to do—until now. Because she’s still crazy about Hawke. And if he could ever learn to forgive her, they just might have a future together.

Hawke is the fifth book in the Carolina Cold Fury series by Sawyer Bennett. I have read each of the books in this series (and everything else by the author) and have enjoyed them all. Hawke fell a bit flat for me....here's my take on the Good and Not So Good in this book...Good: Love the hockey setting and getting to see glimpses of the previous team members in each of the subsequent books. I liked Hawke. Besides being HOT, he seemed like a genuinely nice guy. Vale's relationship with her father was heartwarming as well.
Not So Good: Without giving spoilers, the basis of the contention between them was weak in my opinion. I felt like there was a lot of drama over what amounted to a small miscommunication. That made it hard for me to really gel with them. I didn't think there was as much depth to their characters as with the characters in previous books in this series. The book seemed a bit rushed and didn't have as much development to the story.
All that being said, I will definitely read any future books in this series. I think for those of you that have read the series to date, but haven't read this, I would definitely read as it continues the overall Carolina Fury story along....just know that you may not love it as much as the others.

Hawke A Cold Fury Hockey Novel Carolina Cold Fury Hockey Book 5 edition by Sawyer Bennett Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews
I have read all of the prior books in this series of standalones and have really enjoyed them. This one did not do it for me. I was very frustrated with the two main characters, Hawke and Vale, most of the time. My favorite character in the book was Vale's father, and I was more interested in the outcome of his problem in the story than the relationship of Hawke and Vale.
I realize that these characters were young and immature the first time around, but 7 years have passed and they should have matured by age 27. They were both successful professionals, but did not have the capacity to have an adult conversation. In addition to the lack of communication, their first few sexual encounters in their 2nd chance relationship were very uncomfortable to me. The first would have been categorized as rape if it had gone any further. Vale clearly kept saying "Don't" but he used his size to force his will. The first actual sexual intercourse was the 2 of them admittedly taking advantage of the other. In addition to the bothersome reason, there was no protection used. I realize when they were previously in a 4 year relationship, they had made that decision, but 7 years and many sexual partners later, without pause they go back to that with no concern for birth control or disease protection. Their next encounter was still disturbing as he takes her to his home under false pretences, and when she wants to leave to be with her recently hospitalized father, he refuses to let her go. Then, the same night, when another woman shows up at his house, he yells at Vale to "do not dare take another step" when she tries to walk away and get dressed. And even when they had settled in to a relationship that seemed good, Hawke showed his disrespect for Vale by discussing their sexual activities in front of others, including people she had to work with.
My favorite part of the book was the epilogue. They almost seemed normal, we got to revisit some of the characters from the other books, and the story ended on a positive note.
I will read the later books in this series in hopes that it will turn back to the good reads that came before Hawke's story.
I'll be honest right up front, I did not like Hawke at all. Not once did he redeem himself in my eyes.
Vale and Hawke were sweethearts starting at the age of sixteen. By twenty, their hard partying ways ended up with a life altering event that separated them.
Do I think Vale should of told him what happened? yes, he had a right to know. Do I think it was the right thing for them to separate? yes. They were not mature enough to have kept up a relationship. That point is very clear when Hawke is in the bed of another within days (funny how the truth of where he lost his phone is never confessed). I will once again point out that if you truly love someone you do not try to get over them or forget about them by jumping into random beds straight away.
The thing with the Michelle girl? Just no! Come down and meet her, you'll like her? Jesus, what planet is this guy on? Meet one of your on the sides and be reminded you are a man ho? sure why not.
Which brings me to another huge deal breaker. Having unprotected sex with someone knowing they bed hop. And not even clarifying that they do not ever go unprotected with anyone else. That's just plain stupidity and reckless.
The epilogue brings them an HFN of sorts.
It hurts my heart so bad to have to write this review. I LOVE this series and have read ALL of Sawyer Bennett's books. Her books are an instant purchase for me no matter what. This book for some reason just did not come together for me at all. It started out on the right path and I was instantly hooked and then only about 20% in things started to derail for me. The connection between Hawke and Vale never felt real or genuine to me like her characters normally do. The reason for all of their anger and resentment didn't feel "big" enough and I was really hoping that the reason that Vale left Hawke to begin with was going to be bit larger. Too much of their anger was based on simple misunderstandings and being young. When they did come together it always felt kind if cheap to me and not intimate at all. Even in the end I finished the book with just kind of a "okay they are together...great" type feeling and not the giddy butterflies feeling that her other books ignite in me when I am finished and get to see these amazing couples end up together. Overall, this one just did not hit the mark for me at all but if this is the first book that you have read by this author or in this series PLEASE read the others because they are amazing (my favorite one is "Zack") and this one just seems to have been a one-off.
